Helping older parents with technology without losing patience

If explaining things to your parents ends in frustration for everyone, the problem is usually the teaching method rather than the learner.

A large share of our lesson customers come to us because family attempts ended badly. The pattern is remarkably consistent, and it is almost never about capability — people who once operated far more demanding machinery than a tablet are not incapable of learning one.

What usually goes wrong is the method.

Why family teaching often fails

  • Too fast. You have done it ten thousand times. Each step is invisible to you and entirely new to them.
  • Taking the device. If you take it and do it, nothing is learned. Their hands must do it, even slowly.
  • Unexplained jargon. "Just open settings and toggle it" contains three assumptions.
  • Too much at once. One task per session. Video calling is a whole session, not a preamble to email.
  • Visible impatience. A sigh teaches someone to stop asking. That is the worst possible outcome, because they then struggle silently.

What works instead

  • Start with what they want to do. Not the device tour — the actual goal, usually seeing grandchildren.
  • Simplify first. A home screen of 41 icons is hostile. Reduce it to the six things that matter, with labels.
  • Write it down in their words. Not a manual: their words, their sequence, on paper by the device.
  • Let them make mistakes. Nothing they can tap will break it. Discovering that is what builds confidence.
  • Repeat without complaint. The fourth time is not failure. It is how learning works.

When to hand it to someone else

Sometimes the family relationship is the obstacle — a parent who will not admit confusion to their own child will happily tell a stranger they are lost. That is not a failure on anyone’s part.

A lady in Hoboken had a tablet unused in a drawer for two years after two attempts by her children ended in crossness. Three lessons with the same tutor, a simplified home screen and family added as photo favourites, and she now video calls her grandchildren in Oregon every Sunday unaided. Her capability was never the issue.
